The bahareque house, site of the Museum of Popular Culture, is representative of the traditional household architecture of the Central Valley. It is the main house of a coffee plantation built between 1885-1887 by the parents of former President Alfredo Gonzáles Flores. |
The interior and exterior
spaces of the house re-create a historical mise-en-scéne, typical of the
domestic environment of many Costa Rican families at the end of the
nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth. A collection of items of domestic use, artisanal furniture, and work tools, give visitors the opportunity to appreciate uses, beliefs and customs. |
| The natural surrounding the house, the “solar,” constituted by medicinal and ornamental plants and fruit trees, demonstrates the close relationship of the human being with nature, and the knowledge of nature within an agricultural culture.
